The Darker Side of the Soul

Dear Soul Seeders,

I hope everyone is enjoying their summer so far! It has been an “interesting” one for me (the adjective is a throwback to the British art of understatement, influenced by my teenage years and early twenties in England):

Last month we explored the idea of Seeds and I had visions of my seeds growing and blooming and already enjoying the fruits of my labor. Somehow, things have turned out differently and here is where the concept of “Soul” becomes both challenging and interesting for me. Those who know me are familiar with the fact that I love the idea of the mystery of how our lives unfold. However, this is where it can also get tricky. To explain what I mean, I thought of exploring the idea of Soul a little bit:

From Wikipedia,

“The soul, in many religious, philosophical and mythological traditions, is the incorporeal and, in many conceptions, immortal essence of a living thing…….The Modern English word “soul“, derived from Old English sáwol, sáwel, …The original concept is said to mean originally ‘coming from or belonging to the sea/lake’ because of the Germanic belief in souls being born out of and returning to sacred lakes.”

My fascination with the mysteries of the soul emerged in my late twenties, when grappling with grief around the loss of a significant intimate relationship, which led me to read Thomas Moore’s book, “Soul Mates”. This quote sums it up for me:

It is only through mystery and madness that the soul is revealed

It has been my experience that the events I have felt the least control over (intimate relationship break ups, my children’s emotions and behavior, relationships to others in general) have been the ones to break me open to a new level of being. Without getting into recounting all my dramas, I want to highlight a significant thread throughout: they have always pointed out to me the areas in need of growth or healing. It is a perspective that I have definitely come to later in life!!

What if, on some level, our Soul calls in the perfect relationships, creates the  perfect circumstances, to remind us and bring us back to the knowledge that we always were part of and belonged to the sacred lake.

Last month, at a Soul Piece Jewelry-making jewelry I facilitated, the question in the group that aroused some interesting feelings, and therefore discussion was this:

Which parts of you are you least likely to show to the world?

So, for this month, I would like to put forth the question above. To get the ball rolling, here are a couple of my cringey parts …the insanely jealous part of me and the victim voice that believes that everyone else has it better than me.

  1. You are braver than most. However, your question presents a paradox. That is, if said character trait is one I am least likely to show the world, I would (by sharing it here) be stripping it of this quality. Nevertheless, I will offer the following: I am least likely to show my fear to the world, though the floor of my car runs a close second.

  2. Chaos; “Where brilliant dreams are born.” It takes cracks in our worlds and darkness to allow the light in…the universe seems to be made from chaos but our beautiful world comes from it, I have learned to trust in the chaotic times in my life that they lead me somewhere new! Nothing is wrong with the slow times or “down” times in our “work” or I prefer to use the term “lifestyle”…slowing down, quieting, allowing things to settle and then rebuild afresh and start something with renewed vision…that’s all good and it also can help to calm the storm when things get too fast or overwhelming…Trying to hide it or deny it is fruitless.
